Utility Locating Before Directional Boring

A directional bore crosses everything in its path without seeing it. Locating and verifying crossings first is how crews avoid strikes.

Locate the whole bore path

Mark every utility along and across the planned bore path, not just at the entry and exit pits: public lines through 811 and private lines with EM locating and GPR.

Verify the crossings

Where the bore crosses a critical line, the located depth and position should be confirmed by your excavation crew (for example by daylighting the line) so the bore profile clears it with margin. GPS mapping of every located line gives the driller and engineer the same picture.

Map it

Capturing the located lines with GPS gives the driller and engineer a shared map and leaves a record for the next crew.

Questions

Is GPR useful before boring?

Yes, especially for PVC, HDPE and other non-metallic lines that EM equipment can't trace.

Do you work with telecom and fiber contractors?

Yes. Fiber builds are some of the most common boring projects that need crossings located first.
